Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters Museum is a must for Civil War
enthusiasts. Artifacts, antiques, and a guided tour of the house
highlight a visit to Jackson's Headquarters.
The Hudson River Gothic Revival style house was built in 1854. The
home served as General Jackson's headquarters during the fall and
winter of 1861-62. From this house, he planned the operations and
defense of the Shenandoah Valley including the expeditions on Dam
No. Five along the C & O Canal to the north and the Romney Campaign
to retake the western part of the state. From this office, he wrote
a letter offering his resignation from the Confederate States Army
over the controversial Romney Campaign. Pressed by Federal forces,
Jackson vacated Winchester on March 11, 1862 to begin his famous
Valley Campaign.
Personal items belonging to General Jackson and to members of his
staff, Turner Ashby, Bradley Johnson, and Jedediah Hotchkiss are on
display in the museum today.
